RadioDNS & SPI

RadioDNS and SPI (Service and Programme Information) are industry standards that connect broadcast radio with online services. AutoPod supports these standards to help your station integrate with connected car dashboards, smart radios, and other RadioDNS-enabled devices.

What is RadioDNS?

RadioDNS is a technology standard that allows radio receivers to discover online services associated with a broadcast radio station. When a listener tunes to your FM, DAB, or internet stream on a compatible device, RadioDNS helps the device find:

  • Your station's logo and visual branding
  • Programme information (what's on now, what's next)
  • On-demand content (listen-again episodes)
  • Station website links

What is SPI?

SPI (Service and Programme Information) is the data format used with RadioDNS to describe your station's programming. It includes:

  • Service information — Station name, logos, descriptions
  • Programme information — Schedule data (what's on when)
  • On-demand information — Links to listen-again content

How AutoPod supports RadioDNS

AutoPod can publish your schedule and programme information in SPI format, making it available to RadioDNS-enabled devices. This means:

  • Connected car dashboards can show your station's logo and programme guide
  • Smart radios can display what's playing now and what's coming next
  • Radioplayer and other aggregators can include your station with rich metadata
info

RadioDNS support in AutoPod is available for stations that participate in the RadioDNS ecosystem. If your station is registered with RadioDNS, contact support to configure your SPI feed.

Who needs this?

RadioDNS is most relevant for:

  • Ofcom-licensed FM/DAB stations in the UK — many connected car platforms use RadioDNS to display station information
  • Stations registered with Radioplayer — Radioplayer uses RadioDNS for programme metadata
  • Stations broadcasting on DAB/DAB+ — DAB multiplexes often require SPI data

If your station is internet-only or doesn't need connected car integration, you can skip RadioDNS setup. Your episodes are still distributed through all the other channels (player, RSS, websites, widgets).

Getting started

If your station is registered with RadioDNS and you'd like to configure SPI publishing:

  1. Ensure your broadcast schedule is up to date in the Schedule Builder
  2. Contact AutoPod support with your RadioDNS bearer information
  3. We'll configure the SPI feed for your station

Your schedule data from AutoPod will then be published in SPI format, keeping your programme guide accurate across all RadioDNS-enabled platforms.
